Giants release Burress
The New York Giants have moved on from the ongoing Plaxico Burress saga, releasing the troubled wide receiver on Friday after four years that spanned a myriad of highs and lows.
Burress was suspended for the final four games of the 2008 season and placed on the reserve/non-football injury list after he accidentally shot himself in the leg at a New York City night club. The 31-year-old subsequently surrendered to authorities and was arraigned on a pair of weapons charges.
The suspension marked the second of the 2008 campaign for Burress, who missed an October 2 game against Seattle after being fined and suspended for conduct detrimental to the team. He finished the year with just 35 receptions for 454 yards and four touchdowns.
However, Burress' tenure with the team was also marked by a 2007 season that saw the Giants upset the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLII with the wideout hauling in the late game-winning touchdown pass. Burress went on to sign a contract extension just before the team's 2008 season-opener in September.
Burress joined the Giants after playing five seasons in Pittsburgh. The Steelers took Burress with the eighth overall selection of the 2000 NFL Draft.
