Patience in free agency

The Giants New York Giants are expected to take a similar approach to this year's free agency as they did to last year's free agency. Why not? After all, they won the Super Bowl and anything they can do to duplicate that success is sure to be attempted.

Figure the Giants will be patient and wait for the market to set itself.

They are braced to lose their four unrestricted free agents, although they in reality are truly in the market for only two, safety Gibril Wilson Gibril Wilson and linebacker Kawika Mitchell Kawika Mitchell . The other two players set to hit the market, linebacker Reggie Torbor and running back Derrick Ward, are veteran backups whom the Giants will replace with younger, cheaper players.

Wilson won't be offered from the Giants the $5 million per year he wants and he likely will get it elsewhere.

"The plan as it stands now is for us to test the free agent market," said Wilson's agent, Alvin Keel, in an e-mail message. "The Giants are a great organization and have made an effort to keep Gibril. However we find it in our best interest to explore our options via free agency. We will definitely keep the Giants in the loop and see where this all goes."

Mitchell signed a one-year deal in 2007 (for $1 million) and obviously wants more security. The Giants have made a multiyear offer but Mitchell will explore the market to see if he can get more somewhere else.
