Whitey Lockman passes away at 82
Whitey Lockman, best known for scoring just ahead of Bobby Thomson on his "Shot Heard 'Round the World" home run that gave the New York Giants the NL pennant in 1951, has died at the age of 82, according to the New York Daily News.
According to the report, he died of pulmonary fibrosis Tuesday in Arizona.
Lockman, who played at first base and in the outfield for the Giants, Cardinals, Orioles and Reds, was a lifetime .279 hitter. The one-time All-Star (1952) compiled 114 home runs and 563 RBI in his 15-year career.
He was also a Cubs manager for parts of three seasons (1972-74), going 157-162.
