Barry Cofield Holding Out? New York Giants Need to Draft DT as Insurance Policy
Like a good neighbor, State Farm is there; with a new defensive tackle! While that joke may or may not be funny, what’s definitely not funny is the situation the Giants may be in if and when the lockout is resolved.
New York Giants defensive tackle Barry Cofield has said publicly he is willing to hold out for a contract if the Giants do not offer him a long term deal. Last year, he played under a one-year tender offer after missing out on free agency; he does not want to lose more money by doing the same this year.
So with that in mind, the Giants need to draft a defensive tackle in one of the first three rounds of the NFL draft. On my most recent mock draft on another website, I have the Giants selecting North Carolina’s Marvin Austin in the second round.
Austin is someone who would be a first rounder if he had not gotten suspended his senior season for dealing with an agent. I feel like this was a lapse in judgment and does not raise any red flags so the Giants should ignore that situation and concentrate on how dominant he was on the field.
After the 2009 season many thought Austin would be a first round lock.
Some have the Giants selecting Corey Liuget or Muhammad Wilkerson in the first round; I disagree with that because offensive line and linebacker are more glaring needs.
The ESPN Draft gurus Todd McShay and Mel Kiper Jr. have the Giants selecting Terrell McClain from South Florida, a former teammate of Jason Pierre-Paul’s. I wouldn’t mind this scenario as long as the first two selections are offensive line, running back, or linebacker.
